Cinematography

A Kiss Before Dying (1956) by Gerd Oswald:

Camera Shots: Medium Shot, Long Shot.
Camera Angle: Mostly all eye level but there is also a scene with a low angle shot.
Camera Movement: Very still with slight use of camera pan but not too dramatic.

Inception (2010) by Christopher Nolan:

Camera Shots: Close Up, Medium Shot and Long Shot.
Camera Angle: Eye Level, Low Angle and also scenes with the camera angled to the side.
Camera Movement: The camera movement in this clip mostly pans in and out during the close up angles, the shots are very smooth so the camera operators may have used a steadicam, dolly or track in order to get a super smooth movement for a more effective, professional look.

Between the two eras of film we can see that cinematography has changed a lot, in the older era, there wasn't a lot of camera movement as it may have needed a much higher budget in order to use equipment such as cranes, sliders, dolly and tracks. Now that times have changed and technology has expanded it is now easier for the urban film makers and hollywood to get access to this professional equipment. A Kiss Before Dying only used a deep focus (everything in frame in focus) where as inception used a smaller depth of field. Inception had very smooth pans in and out where as A Kiss Before Dying had sleight movements which weren't as smooth. Also a kiss before had very simple camera angles where as inception had more complex interesting angles such as the shot where the characters were on the train track.

Blog Feedback And Response: 13/10/2014

WWW: Great to see media language highlighted consistently - it's a great habit to get into early in the course and appears in every mark scheme whether coursework or exam. Excellent choice of sound analysis with the Dark Knight clip - and plenty of insight in your writing too. You are clearly justifying the decision to award you a place in AS Media which I am delighted to see.

EBI: Check the formatting of your blog - many pictures are not displaying which makes it harder to follow your written analysis. I hope you'll be aiming for an A grade in Media but you definitely need to work on your media consumption, particularly news. You can use Twitter to access it but you absolutely need an understanding of the media world (including news/politics/journalism) if you want a top grade in A Level Media.

LR: Reflect on your first month of AS Media. What is your strongest piece of work so far? What is your weakest? What specific skills or knowledge do you need to develop over the rest of the course?

My strongest piece so far has to be the sound analysis task, I managed to choose a great clip which allowed me to talk a lot about sound and how it built tension. Also, I used all of the sound key words in this piece.
My weakest piece has to be the sound presentation for contrapuntal and parallel sound as i didn't use the correct images as it didn't show a very WIDE difference between the two keywords.

TV Show Profile: BBC Three

Channel: BBC Three
The type of programmes that appear on BBC Three are mature comedies and quite graphic dramas. Also show mature themed reality.
A typical audience member for this TV channel would be aimed for teenagers and above. Its audience are very equal in terms of gender but in terms of social class it may target low to middle class youths. Also may target an audience with almost any job as there shows are for putting your feet up for some relaxation or to have a good laugh.
BBC Three main aim is to entertain and keep the audience watching. Its aim is to appeal to the youth. Currently BBC Three does not have a lot of viewing figures as its currently struggling to be kept on air, this may be because the youth generation may be occupied on a lot of other media institutions other than TV.

Media Language: High Brow, Documentary look and style production.
Genre: Reality show with elements of comedy and Documentary.

"Teacher swap is the show that sends your teachers in London away to third world countries to teach in there schools, they will be put to the test as they must try their hardest to cheap pupils in really bad conditions such as schools with hardly no equipment, dangerous schools in the ghetto of America and much more!"

Cinematography: Camera Framing

THE EQUALISER: Action/Drama
Camera Framing: Medium Shot
Effect Given: Using a medium shot instead of a close up shot of each of the actors (which is more common) gives more of an effect in this scene. It shows us the reactions, facial expression and body language in the characters in real time which gives the audience the effect of realism.
Angle: Eye Level

THE GODFATHER: Drama/Action
 Camera Framing: Close Up
Effect Given: Using a close up on this shot really emphasises the facial expressions and fine acting skills of Al Pacino whereas using a shot which would be further away, such as a medium shot or long shot wouldn't give the audience that sense of close proximity or visuals to even tell he's the lead character or to show the detail of his acting.
Angle: Eye Level

THE CONJURING: Horror/Thriller
Camera Framing: Long Shot with a Low Angle.
Effect Given: The effect of using a long shot really gives a large scale factor and a more interesting look to the viewers eyes compared to zooming in to the house for close proximity. If we were to use a medium or close up shot for the house we wouldn't feel as creeped out or scared of it compared to the long shot. The long shot shows more of the setting and how alone the house is. Also the long shot fits well with the tree and rope hanging down which creates a story and use of context in the scene (mise en scene)
Angle: Low Angle

INCEPTION: Drama-Action-Mystery

Camera Framing: Big Close Up
Effect Given: the effect of a big close up shows the use of fine acting and drama in Leonardo DiCaprio. The effect of the BCU shows the detail in his eyes (which is the focal point) and creates a high effect of drama and mystery as the audience would want to know what he is looking at.
Angle: Low Angle

Analysing Sound: The Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan

In this clip there are a lot of good uses of sound used. The main sound effects placed is the sound of punches and violence. If this Diegetic sound effect wasn't placed the audience wouldn't get a high impact of how meaningful and powerful the punches batman are throwing on The Joker.  Another Diegetic sound is the scuffle, fight sound made during the abuse batman is putting on the joker, this gives the audience a real illusion of reality.

The dialogue of the actors is spoken in a very light, deep voice in the beginning, almost lie a loud whisper. But as the Non Diegetic soundtrack tenses up and anger builds up between the characters their voices change to a more loud, violent, threatening voice. The joker has a very contrapuntal piece of dialogue, this is suggested as when he's being abused and attacked he is laughing and doesn't seem to be in pain. This is contrapuntal as the audience wouldn't suggest a human being to do this at all in this given scenario.

The Non Diegetic soundtrack plays the biggest role in this clip. At first its silent with only dialogue heard in the clip, as the interrogation begins and more secrets are revealed Batmans anger builds. As his anger builds, an extremely intense, loud screeching type of music is played. As more and more anger builds the sound gets louder and more high pitched. This keeps the audience engaged and interested to find out what happens simply due to the engaging soundtrack played. As the interrogation approaches its end the soundtrack reaches its highest peak and dramatically cuts off. There is also a slight use of Sound Bridges as the soundtrack is played with a build up before something dramatic and intense is about to happen such as when batman lifts the joker off the ground from the table. During close proximity and combat another soundtrack of low pitch deep drum bangs is played over the screeching sound to accommodate the intense violence.
